How much a trip to China costs in 2026-27

Checked October 2026

Excluding international flights, a 10-day first trip to Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai costs roughly $470-790 per person on a budget and $780-1,350 mid-range, by our estimate from current train and flight fares, ticket prices and hotel price data. A private tour with a guide, car and 4-5 star hotels typically runs $165-350 per person per day. Hotel level and the number of private guide days drive most of the difference.

Daily budgets per person

These ranges are our estimates for one person when two share a room, before international flights. Train fares come from China Railway's 12306 system, meal and transit prices from Numbeo (updated October 27, 2026), and hotel prices from Kayak data compiled by Budget Your Trip, all checked in late October 2026. We convert at about ¥6.7 to the US dollar.

Typical total $45-85 $75-155 $165-350

Budget means a budget hotel or a private room in a hostel, meals in noodle shops and food courts (Numbeo puts an inexpensive restaurant meal at ¥30, about $4.50), the metro at around ¥4 a ride, and second-class trains. Traveler-reported spending collected by Budget Your Trip averages $40 a day for budget travelers.

Mid-range means a well-rated 3- or 4-star hotel, one sit-down dinner a day (Numbeo: ¥200 for two at a mid-range restaurant), some taxis (Beijing's flag fare is ¥13) and second- or first-class trains. Budget Your Trip's mid-range traveler average is $101 a day.

Private tour means 4- or 5-star hotels plus a guide and car on sightseeing days. Typical private tour: $165-350 per person per day depending on hotels, group size and season. For comparison, Budget Your Trip's analysis of organized tour packages in China averages $280 a day.

What hotels cost

Hotel prices vary a lot by city and season. Average nightly prices from Kayak data, before taxes and fees:

Average per room, per night Beijing Shanghai Xi'an
Budget hotels $29 $23 $14
Mid-range hotels $54 $44 $27
Luxury hotels $106 $86 $48
Luxury hotels, high season about $197 about $160 about $90

Treat these as a floor rather than a promise, because they average thousands of properties of every kind. Better-reviewed places cost more: the top-rated quarter of Beijing hotels in the same data averages $58 a night, rising to about $108 in high season.

A 10-day first trip: what it costs

This example follows the shape of our classic first trip: four nights in Beijing, two in Xi'an and three in Shanghai, with a high-speed train to Xi'an and a flight on to Shanghai. Figures are per person with two sharing, excluding international flights and visa fees.

10 days, per person Budget Mid-range Private tour
Hotels, 9 nights ¥700-1,350 ($105-200) ¥1,350-2,550 ($200-380) Included
Train to Xi'an, flight to Shanghai ¥950-1,500 ($140-225) ¥1,050-1,650 ($155-245) Included
Food ¥900-1,300 ($135-195) ¥1,800-2,800 ($270-420) Partly included
Local transport, including airport transfers ¥200-400 ($30-60) ¥400-1,000 ($60-150) Included
Sights ¥400-700 ($60-105) ¥600-1,000 ($90-150) Included
Total About ¥3,150-5,250 ($470-790) About ¥5,200-9,000 ($780-1,350) $1,650-3,500

The two big fixed tickets are official prices. The Forbidden City costs ¥60 (about $9) from April to October and ¥40 (about $6) from November to March, plus ¥10 each for the Treasure Gallery and Clock Gallery. The Terracotta Army costs ¥120 (about $18) year-round. Great Wall costs depend on the section and whether you ride a cable car; our Great Wall guide has the details.

Train fares on 12306

China's high-speed trains use variable fares, so the price depends on the train and the date. These are the fares 12306 showed in late October 2026 for G trains on a weekday in early November:

Route Fastest trip Second class First class
Beijing to Xi'an About 4 hr 10 min ¥470-618 ($70-93) ¥754-988 ($113-148)
Xi'an to Shanghai About 5 hr 50 min ¥652-783 ($98-117) ¥1,039-1,259 ($156-189)
Beijing to Shanghai About 4 hr 20 min ¥525-697 ($79-105) ¥883-1,117 ($132-167)

Seats are assigned when you book, and first class costs roughly 60% more than second class on these routes.

What drives the price

Hotel level is the biggest lever. In the Kayak data, an average luxury hotel in Beijing costs more than three times an average budget one.

Season and holidays come next. High-season hotel averages run close to double the year-round figures: Beijing's mid-range average of $54 rises to about $102. Chinese New Year (February 6, 2027) and the National Day holiday from October 1 are the busiest times to travel inside China, so book early if your dates overlap. Some sights also charge more in their April-October peak season, like the Forbidden City.

Private guide days add up fast, but a guide and car cost much the same for two people as for five. That is why private tour prices per person fall as the group grows.

Internal flights and pace matter too. Every extra city adds a transfer and often a half day of travel. Long hops, such as Beijing to Guilin, are where flying starts to make sense, but count the airport transfers and the earlier arrival time when you compare it with the train.

Ways to save money

  • Take the train, in second class. Between Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai the fastest trains take about 4 to 6 hours with no airport transfers, and 12306 sells at face value. As of October 2026, tickets go on sale 15 days before departure.
  • Sleep on the train. An overnight train from Beijing to Xi'an takes about 12 to 13 hours, and a berth costs ¥254.50 to ¥398.50 (about $38-60) for a hard or soft sleeper on the Z and T trains, which saves a hotel night.
  • Travel in the off-season. Many sights, including the Terracotta Army and Mutianyu Great Wall, run winter hours from mid-November to mid-March, and the Forbidden City drops to ¥40 from November to March. Avoid the Chinese New Year week.
  • Use free sights. The National Museum of China on Tiananmen Square is free; reserve with your passport up to 7 days ahead, and note it closes on Mondays. Walking the Bund in Shanghai or Beijing's hutong lanes costs nothing.
  • Eat where office workers eat. A meal in an inexpensive restaurant averages ¥30 in both Beijing and Shanghai, according to Numbeo.
  • Ride the metro at around ¥4 a trip instead of taking taxis everywhere.
  • Mind the payment fee. Alipay and WeChat Pay add 3% to foreign-card payments over ¥200, and shoppers can reclaim VAT. Our guide on how to pay in China covers both.
  • Book child fares. On trains, children aged 6 to 13 pay half fare. Our guide to China with kids covers discounts at sights too.

When hiring a local agency is worth it

Plenty of travelers do Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai on their own with Alipay, 12306 and a translation app, and the budget columns above assume exactly that. You don't need a tour for the classic route if you're comfortable with apps.

A licensed local agency earns its fee in other situations: a first trip with only a week or so, travel with young children or older parents, places with harder logistics such as Zhangjiajie, peak holiday dates, or when you want a guide who can explain what you're looking at. The agency handles the bookings, the guide meets you at the hotel, and you spend your time on the sights rather than on tickets and transfers.

If that sounds like your trip, tell us your dates. A trip designer from a licensed partner agency emails a plan and a quote within 24 hours, and you only pay the agency if you decide to book.

Questions people ask

How much does a 10-day trip to China cost?

Our estimate for Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai is about $470-790 per person on a budget and $780-1,350 mid-range, sharing a room and excluding international flights. A private tour of the same length typically costs $1,650-3,500 per person.

Is China expensive to visit?

Day-to-day costs are moderate. Numbeo puts a meal in an inexpensive restaurant at about ¥30 ($4.50) and a local transit ticket at ¥4, and Kayak data puts the average 4-star hotel in Beijing at about $67 a night before taxes. Long-distance trains and private guides are the big items.

How much is a private tour of China per day?

Typical private tour: $165-350 per person per day depending on hotels, group size and season. That usually covers hotels, a guide and car on sightseeing days, trains and entrance tickets.

Is it cheaper to take the train or fly in China?

For the classic first-trip cities the train is simpler to budget: Beijing to Xi'an costs ¥470-618 in second class and takes about 4 hours 10 minutes on the fastest trains, city to city. Flights make more sense for long hops where the train would take most of a day, such as Xi'an to Shanghai: about 2 hours in the air against 5 hours 50 minutes or more by train, often for a similar fare.

When is the cheapest time to visit China?

November to March, avoiding Chinese New Year, which falls on February 6, 2027. Some sights charge their off-season price then, such as the Forbidden City at ¥40 instead of ¥60, and you avoid the high-season hotel rates of the busiest months.
