What Zhangjiajie is and where the Avatar mountains are
Zhangjiajie is a city in northwest Hunan province, but most people searching for it mean Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. China's first national forest park (1982), it sits inside the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The official geopark counts some 3,000 quartz-sandstone peaks and pillars here, and they were a key model for the floating mountains in Avatar. In 2010 the Southern Sky Column at Yuanjiajie was renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain."
Locally, "Zhangjiajie" can mean the city, the park or the whole region. Wulingyuan is the town at the park's east entrance, under an hour by road from the city. Tianmen Mountain is a separate sight right next to the city.
How many days to spend in Zhangjiajie
Three days covers the highlights: two in the national forest park and one at Tianmen Mountain. Four is better with children or older travelers, or if you want the Grand Canyon glass bridge too. A park day is short walks between viewpoints, linked by eco-buses, an elevator and cable cars, and the waits add up.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park tickets for 2026
One ticket covers the whole Wulingyuan core area: Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie, Huangshizhai, Golden Whip Stream and the Ten-Mile Gallery. Prices as of October 2026:
| Ticket | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Joint ticket (entry + eco-buses), adult | ¥236 (about $35) | 4 consecutive days, optional ¥3 insurance |
| Joint ticket, concession | ¥119 (about $18) | Ages 14-17, 60-64, full-time students |
| Annual pass with eco-buses | ¥310 (about $46) | One year |
| Children under 14 | Free | Entry and eco-buses both free |
| Seniors 65 and over | Free entry | Eco-bus at half price (¥36) |
The entry price has been the same all year since 2025, so there is no cheaper winter rate. Entry is by real-name booking: you pick an entry gate and a time slot, then show the same passport at the gate. Book through the park's official WeChat mini program or an app such as Trip.com, as early as possible for holiday dates. Bring every traveler's passport, including children's, because free and discounted entry is checked at the gate. Ticket offices open 7:30-17:00.
Bailong Elevator, cable car and train prices
None of these are in the park ticket. 2026 prices:
| Ride | One way | Round trip |
|---|---|---|
| Bailong Elevator | ¥65 (about $10) | ¥130 |
| Tianzi Mountain cable car | ¥72 (about $11) | ¥144 |
| Yangjiajie cable car | ¥76 (about $11) | ¥152 |
| Huangshizhai cable car | ¥65 (about $10) | ¥130 |
| Ten-Mile Gallery train | ¥38 (about $6) | ¥76 |
The Bailong Elevator links the valley floor near Shuiraosimen with the Yuanjiajie plateau: three glass cars running 326 meters up a cliff in under two minutes. It is also the park's main bottleneck. During scheduled maintenance in 2026 (March 18-25 and June 1-6) it ran at two-thirds capacity, and the park pointed visitors to the Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie cable cars instead. Check park notices before you go.
Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream
- Yuanjiajie is the Avatar plateau. The Southern Sky Column, also called the Qiankun Column, rises about 150 meters from its base, and the First Bridge Under Heaven is a natural stone bridge about 20 meters long spanning two peaks. Paths are paved, with steps at most viewpoints.
- Tianzi Mountain gives the big panoramas: from He Long Park you look down on the pillar ranks around Imperial Brush Peak. Ride the cable car up, or hike up from the Ten-Mile Gallery on the official geopark route.
- Golden Whip Stream is a 7.5-kilometer trail along a clear stream on the valley floor, ending at Shuiraosimen. It is the easiest walk in the park and cooler in summer, and you can walk any stretch and turn back.
- Ten-Mile Gallery is a valley lined with rock formations. The small train saves tired legs.
Tianmen Mountain: Line C, the 999 steps and glass skywalks
Tianmen Mountain rises to 1,518 meters right above Zhangjiajie city. Its famous cableway, 7,455 meters long and starting downtown, has carried no passengers since October 13, 2026 while it is upgraded, and no reopening date has been announced. Until it reopens, everyone visits by Line C:
- Start at the Mountain Gate (Shanmen) on the edge of the city. Shuttle buses still run there from the old cableway station downtown, which keeps a ticket window.
- Ride the Tianmen Cave express cable car up.
- Climb the 999 steps to Tianmen Cave, the natural arch known as Heaven's Gate (131.5 meters high), or pay ¥32 for the escalator. Going down is free.
- Take the seven-section escalator through the mountain to the summit, walk the cliff paths, and return the same way.
The ticket is ¥288 (about $43) for adults, including ¥3 insurance, and covers entry, the express cable car both ways and the summit escalators. Children under 14 go free, and teens 14-17, students and seniors pay less. Tickets are sold 7:30-16:00 and rides start at 8:00. Extras include the summit forest cable car (¥25 one way) and shoe covers for the glass walkways.
The summit has three glass skywalks: the East Line, the West Line and Coiling Dragon Cliff. The East Line closed for full repairs on May 12, 2026, while the other two stayed open, and any of them can close for weather or maintenance. Line C skips the 99-bend Tongtian Avenue road, though you can still look down on it from Coiling Dragon Cliff.
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge
The glass-bottomed bridge, 430 meters long and about 300 meters above the canyon floor, opened in 2016. It sits in the separate Grand Canyon scenic area, about 30 km from Wulingyuan, and needs its own ticket: about ¥178 (about $27) for canyon plus bridge, including insurance. Book ahead with your passport and allow half a day.
Best time to visit Zhangjiajie, and the fog
April-May and September-October are the best months, outside the October 1-7 holiday. Zhangjiajie is wet: May averages 16 rainy days in the city, and June and July bring the most rain, around 220-230 mm a month. July highs average 33.5°C (92°F), and summer is peak domestic season. Winter is quiet and cold, with January highs around 9.5°C (49°F) in the city and colder up on the plateaus.
Low cloud between the pillars is the classic view, but thick fog can hide everything for hours. A four-day ticket gives you time to wait it out. More on seasons across the country in our best time to visit China guide.
How to get to Zhangjiajie
| From | Best option | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Changsha | Train, Changsha Station to Zhangjiajie West | From about 1 hour 55 minutes |
| Changsha South | Train to Zhangjiajie West | About 3 hours |
| Guangzhou | Train, Guangzhou South to Zhangjiajie West | About 6-7 hours |
| Beijing | Flight to Zhangjiajie Hehua airport | About 2 hours 40 minutes |
| Shanghai | Flight from Pudong | About 2 hours 15-35 minutes |
From Changsha, use Changsha Station: trains from Changsha South take a longer route. Beijing has one direct high-speed train a day, but it takes 10.5-12 hours, so most people fly. Hehua airport is 5 km from downtown and about 30 km from Wulingyuan, and buses and taxis link Zhangjiajie West station with Wulingyuan in under an hour. Train and flight bookings need your passport and a working phone; see China eSIM and apps.
Where to stay: Wulingyuan or Zhangjiajie city
- Wulingyuan town, at the park's east entrance, has most of the hotels and restaurants and the quickest start for the Bailong Elevator, Tianzi Mountain and the Ten-Mile Gallery. Base yourself here for park days.
- Around the Forest Park (south) gate is a smaller base closest to Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai; the geopark recommends it for hikes there.
- Zhangjiajie city is near Tianmen Mountain, the airport and Zhangjiajie West station. Spend your Tianmen night here, usually at the start or end of the trip.
Golden Week and holiday crowds
The busiest dates are China's public holidays: Golden Week (October 1-7), the early-May Labor Day break and Chinese New Year, plus the July-August school holidays. Over the eight-day holiday in October 2025, Hunan's official tourism data counted 643,400 visits to the Wulingyuan-Tianmen area. On those dates expect long lines for eco-buses, the Bailong Elevator and Tianmen's cable car. If you can't avoid them, book the moment tickets open and be at the gate for the first entry slot.
A 3-day Zhangjiajie itinerary
Day 1: Golden Whip Stream and Yuanjiajie. Enter at the Wulingyuan gate at opening, take the eco-bus toward Shuiraosimen and walk part of Golden Whip Stream while it is quiet. Ride the Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie for the Avatar pillar and the First Bridge Under Heaven, then come back down the same way.
Day 2: Ten-Mile Gallery and Tianzi Mountain. Ride the Ten-Mile Gallery train early, then the Tianzi Mountain cable car up to He Long Park and the views over Imperial Brush Peak. Return by cable car. Strong hikers can walk the official Ten-Mile Gallery to Tianzi Mountain route instead.
Day 3: Tianmen Mountain. Move to Zhangjiajie city, be at the Mountain Gate for the 8:00 start and give Line C most of the day. Leave on an evening train or flight, or stay another night.
With a fourth day, add the Grand Canyon glass bridge or the Huangshizhai loop.
Tips for older travelers and kids
- Plan around waits, not distance. Eco-buses connect the main areas, but at busy times you queue for them, and the Bailong Elevator line can be the longest wait of the day.
- Let the machines do the climbing. The elevator, cable cars and Tianmen's escalators remove most of the stairs. Golden Whip Stream is the flattest walk; most viewpoints have steps.
- Free manual wheelchairs are available at every park ticket gate. Since June 2026, battery-powered wheelchairs are not allowed in cable cars, elevators or eco-buses, and the park will store yours.
- In the national park, children under 14 and seniors 65 and over enter free; at Tianmen, under-14s ride free. Carry everyone's passport to prove age.
- Swap the stroller for a baby carrier. Stepped paths and packed buses are hard work with wheels.
- Bring rain jackets and a warm layer, since the plateaus are cooler than town. More family advice in our China with kids guide.

Questions people ask
How many days do you need in Zhangjiajie?
Three days covers the highlights: two in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and one at Tianmen Mountain. Add a fourth day for the Grand Canyon glass bridge, or to slow down with kids or older travelers.
Is the Zhangjiajie park ticket valid for more than one day?
Yes. The ¥236 joint ticket (entry plus eco-buses) is valid for four consecutive days, so two or three park days fit on one ticket. The Bailong Elevator, cable cars and the Ten-Mile Gallery train are paid separately.
Is the Tianmen Mountain cable car running?
Not as of October 2026. The main cableway stopped carrying passengers on October 13, 2026 for an upgrade, and no reopening date has been announced. Visitors ride the shorter Tianmen Cave cable car from the Mountain Gate instead (Line C).
Is the Bailong Elevator included in the park ticket?
No. It costs ¥65 (about $10) each way. The Tianzi Mountain cable car is ¥72 and the Yangjiajie cable car ¥76 one way.
Is Zhangjiajie worth it in rain or fog?
Often, yes. Low cloud drifting between the pillars is the classic view, but thick fog can hide everything for hours. A four-day ticket gives you room to wait for a clearer spell.
Can you visit Zhangjiajie from Changsha?
Yes, but stay overnight. The fastest trains from Changsha Station reach Zhangjiajie West in under 2 hours, then it is under an hour by road to Wulingyuan, and the park needs at least two full days.
