  • Length7 days
  • BestLate December to mid-February
  • PaceModerate

Three nights in Harbin for the ice and snow parks, then a high-speed train of about 1-1.5 hours to Yabuli for a night of skiing, a 2-3 hour road trip to China Snow Town for a night in the village, and about 4-5.5 hours by road and train back to Harbin for a final night. Day by day

Day 1: Arrive in Harbin, Central Street at dusk

Fly in direct from Northeast Asia or via Beijing or Shanghai; this winter Harbin has 21 daily flights to Beijing and 25 to Shanghai. The airport is about 37 km out, roughly an hour by taxi or DiDi. Stay near Central Street (Metro Line 2) and walk its 1,450 m of cobbles to the Flood Control Memorial Tower on the frozen Songhua River. If your payment apps aren't set up, see how to pay in China.

Day 2: Saint Sophia, the river and Ice and Snow World

Start at Saint Sophia Cathedral, completed in 1932 and now an architecture museum, a short walk from Central Street (8:30-21:00 daily last winter). Late morning, try the ice slides and snow tubing at the Songhua River Ice and Snow Carnival behind the memorial tower: entry is free, and rides cost ¥30-80 (about $4-12) each in 2024-25.

After lunch, ride Metro Line 2 three stops to Ice and Snow World and go in around 2 or 3 p.m. to see the ice by day and the lights at dusk, about 4 p.m. Last season adults paid ¥328 (about $49); 2026-27 dates and prices had not been announced as of October 29, 2026 (see our Harbin Ice Festival guide).

Day 3: Sun Island, Siberian tigers and the lantern park

Be at the Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo for its 9:00 opening (¥198, about $30, last season; Metro Line 2), while the light is good for the sculptures. Then take a short taxi ride to the Siberian Tiger Park on the same north bank, where a park bus drives you among the tigers: ¥110 (about $16) in 2025, with the last bus around 4 p.m. in winter. After dark, see the free ice lanterns at Zhaolin Park near Central Street (10:00-21:00 last season).

Day 4: Train to Yabuli and a first ski lesson

Take a morning high-speed train from Harbin Station (Metro Line 2) or Harbin West to Yabuli West: about 1-1.5 hours and ¥72-86 (about $11-13) in second class on a late-October 2026 timetable. About 27 ran daily in February 2025; book on 12306 with your passport when sales open, 15 days ahead. A ¥5 shuttle bus or a taxi then takes 20-30 minutes to the Sun Mountain (Yangguang) and Xintiwei ski areas, so allow 2.5-3 hours door to door.

Yabuli has 55 runs, with gentle beginner slopes served by magic-carpet lifts. The ski areas rent skis, boots and poles and sell lessons; a 3-hour beginner session is the usual start. Non-skiers can ride the cable car or the 2.68 km alpine slide, which also runs in winter. Sleep near the slopes.

Day 5: Over the mountains to Snow Town

No railway reaches China Snow Town (Xuexiang), so go by road: about 2 hours by car or 3 hours by tourist bus. On the 2024-25 timetable the first bus left Yabuli West at 9:10 and reached Snow Town at 12:30, for ¥85 (about $13). Book on the Longyue Chuxing (龙悦出行) WeChat mini-program and check the day before, since snow can disrupt the road.

Snow lies here about seven months a year and can reach 2 m (6.5 ft) deep, piling up on the roofs of this forest-farm village. Entry costs ¥140 (about $21) in peak season and stays valid for 48 hours, so one ticket covers your stay. Walk the main street in the afternoon, then watch the red lanterns come on at dusk. Rooms are in simple family-run guesthouses, often with a heated brick bed (kang); book one with a private bathroom and confirm the price in writing.

Day 6: Early morning in the village, back to Harbin

Walk the village early, before the first buses from Harbin and Yabuli arrive around midday. Then take the bus (first departure 9:00 on the 2024-25 timetable) to Yabuli West and a high-speed train to Harbin: about 5-5.5 hours door to door, or about 4 hours with a hired car to the station. The direct tourist bus to Central Street, ¥120 (about $18) in 2024-25, takes about 6 hours. Book a train at least an hour after the bus is due, in case snow slows the road.

Day 7: Fly home from Harbin

Allow at least an hour to the airport, more after fresh snow, and leave a long layover if you connect through Beijing or Shanghai.

Getting around

Leg How Door to door Typical fare
Harbin to Yabuli High-speed train to Yabuli West, then shuttle bus or taxi About 2.5-3 hours ¥72-86 (about $11-13) train, ¥5 shuttle
Yabuli to Snow Town Tourist bus or car About 2.5-3.5 hours ¥80-85 (about $12-13) by bus, 2024-25
Snow Town to Harbin Bus or car to Yabuli West, then high-speed train About 4-5.5 hours About ¥160-170 (about $24-26) by bus and train
Snow Town to Harbin, direct Tourist bus About 6-6.5 hours ¥120 (about $18), 2024-25

Why this order:

  • City days first: you get over the flight with short metro rides and can check the mountain forecast before you leave.
  • Train before road: the train covers the long stretch to Yabuli, leaving only 2-3 hours of mountain road on the way out.
  • A buffer night before you fly: snow can delay mountain roads, so the long day back is never your flight day.

When to go

Venue Last season (2025-26)
Yabuli ski areas Opened November 7
Snow Town November 17 to March 3
Ice and Snow World December 17 to February 21 (closed early)
Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo December 27 (trial) to March 3
Zhaolin Park ice lanterns From December 30

So the whole route worked from December 30 until the ice park closed early in late February. For 2026-27, Yabuli planned to open in late October 2026; no other dates had been announced as of October 29, 2026. Go on January weekdays other than January 5, the festival's opening ceremony, and avoid New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year (February 6, 2027; the public holiday covers at least February 5-8).

January averages -12°C (11°F) by day and -22°C (-8°F) at night in Harbin. Weather stations in Shangzhi and Hailin, the cities Yabuli and Snow Town belong to, average January lows of about -25°C (-12°F) and -23°C (-9°F).

Ski tickets, rental and lessons vary by ski area, session length and date; 2026-27 prices were not out in late October 2026. Last season Harbin's tourism association expected tour prices to rise 30-50% in mid to late December, at New Year and at Chinese New Year, so book those dates early. More in what a China trip costs.

Typical private tour: $165-350 per person per day depending on hotels, group size and season.

Make it yours

  • Five days, no skiing: three nights in Harbin and one in Snow Town, by train and tourist bus via Yabuli West both ways.
  • Before Christmas: Yabuli and Snow Town open weeks before Harbin's ice parks, so for mid to late December dates run the loop in reverse and end in Harbin.
  • Beijing before or after: a separate part of a longer trip, not inside these seven days: about 2 hours by air, or 4.5 hours on the fastest trains from Beijing Chaoyang to Harbin West. See our Great Wall guide and classic first trip.
  • Mohe: China's northernmost city is about 2 hours by air or 17 hours by overnight train from Harbin, so plan it as a separate trip of three or four days.

If you'd rather have a local team plan and book this, with a driver for the mountain days, tell us your dates.

Questions people ask

How do you get from Harbin to Snow Town?

There is no railway to Snow Town. The quickest way is a high-speed train to Yabuli West (about 1-1.5 hours), then a car or tourist bus over the mountains (about 2-3 hours). The direct tourist bus from Central Street took about 6 hours on its 2024-25 timetable and cost ¥120 (about $18).

Is Snow Town worth an overnight stay?

Yes, if basic rooms are fine with you. The first buses from Harbin and Yabuli arrive around midday, so staying gives you the lantern-lit evening and a quiet early morning, and the ¥140 (about $21) ticket is valid for 48 hours. Rooms are in simple family-run guesthouses, often with a heated brick bed (kang).

Can beginners ski at Yabuli?

Yes. Yabuli has 55 runs, including gentle beginner slopes served by magic-carpet lifts, and the ski areas rent equipment and sell lessons. A 3-hour beginner session with an instructor is the usual first step; ask ahead if you need an instructor who speaks English.

When is the best time for this Harbin itinerary?

Between late December and mid-February. Last season Yabuli opened on November 7 and Snow Town on November 17, but Ice and Snow World opened only on December 17 and the Zhaolin Park lanterns on December 30, and the ice park closed early on February 21 after a warm spell.

Do I need a tour for this route?

No. High-speed trains, the ski shuttle and the tourist buses make it doable on your own with your passport, a payment app and a translation app. A car with a driver for the two mountain days saves time on the road and handles your luggage in the snow.
